Kerith Family Recovery
Kerith Brook represents a place of support in a harsh place. The word "Kerith" or "Cherith" means "a cutting; separation; a gorge, a torrent-bed or winter-stream, a "brook," in whose banks the prophet Elijah hid himself during the early part of the three-year drought. The brook itself is a resource created out of a complex space.
In the story, ravens feed Elijah twice daily, another visual of our support coming from a nontraditional place. Ravens are one of the most intelligent birds in creation, used multiple times to represent messages to look for hope. Known to be scavengers, they are unclean according to the old law, but ravens were the chosen tool of God to support his messenger during a time of uncertainty. Consistently, God sent help to Elijah in strange and nontraditional ways, Kerith Brook being the starting point of this beautiful and unusual journey.
In the New Testament, we see a new covenant connection to Kerith just before Peter is called to the house of Cornelius. God meets him in a vision, challenging his attachment to old covenant laws. When Peter refused to partake, "What God has cleansed, no longer consider unholy." Earlier in scripture, we see Jesus speak about who is family in the kingdom of heaven. "For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother, sister, and mother."
The name Kerith has been a solid meaning to many of the Leaders within Christian Formation Ministries. It represents the vast types of community support and resources that make serving our families possible. It also illustrates how often those who are best equipped to serve the incarcerated and recovery population are those who have come themselves from these difficult places.
Celebrating 19 years of service, Christian Formation Ministries was established in 2005 by Bishop Richard and Dawn Johnson to bring the best recovery support across the country to the Kentuckiana Area. The goal has been and will continue to be, to serve families recovering from addiction and incarceration in Southern Indiana, emphasizing helping the children of prisoners and addicts. During our 19-year journey, we understand that our support and safe space often come from unexpected sources. We continue to see that the best people to serve and support the work of family recovery are the individuals and families who have experienced addiction, incarceration, powerlessness, and healing in their own lives.
Over the years, we have often shared that we are a ministry fed by ravens to support ravens, taking care of those in our community who have been written off and equipping those called to serve the unseen in our populous. We also desire to be a resting place, a source of refreshment and peace in turbulent seasons—are source for those who look for hope in a place of difficulty or lack.
The legacy of Christian Formation Ministries, Inc. is powerful, serving our local, national, and international communities. No matter what labels we put on our service, our history of serving our community in faith will never change. It is time to take on a name that better reflects the heart of the population we serve and put a laser focus on our mission to who we are.
